Decks above the waterline

Pool Decks, Pavers and Coping

Travertine, artistic, Belgrade and cement pavers, laid on a wire-mesh deck, with coping and tile at the water's edge.

Chapter 01

What happens to poured concrete around a pool

Four Seasons puts the problem in one line: say goodbye to the common issues of cracking and chipping seen with traditional poured concrete. A poured deck is one continuous slab, and when a slab lets go the damage shows up as cracks across it and chips along its edges, right where bare feet and wet loungers go.

A paver deck is built from individual units instead of one slab. Four Seasons offers its decks in pavers for that reason, so the material is a decision made in the design, with Colin Cox, rather than an afterthought once the shell is finished.

Four paver choices, and the edge that finishes them

The deck materials Four Seasons builds with are travertine, artistic, Belgrade and cement pavers. Travertine is natural stone. Belgrade and cement pavers are manufactured units, and artistic is the choice when the deck is meant to carry a pattern. Which one fits depends on the house, the yard and the pool shape, and it gets settled in the design.

The deck ends where the pool begins, and two parts do that work: coping caps the top of the shell, and tile runs along the waterline. Both are named steps in the Four Seasons construction sequence, tile and coping coming before the deck. Because they come first, the deck is laid to meet them.

Chapter 03

The part of the deck you never see: a bonded wire mesh

Under the pavers, Four Seasons builds the deck on wire mesh and bonds that mesh to the pool equipment. The reason is stray ground current, which the bond is there to handle. It is one of the listed construction standards, and it is invisible once the deck is down.

The warranty covers the visible parts. Their published table gives tile, coping, decking and skimmers 2 years each. For deck questions or a site visit, the construction line is (252) 207-5001.

Colin Cox designs and leads pool deck construction from Corolla to Cape Hatteras, based in Point Harbor. Construction line: (252) 207-5001.

A deck is poured, laid and bonded around a pool that already exists, or one that is about to. The custom pool construction page follows the sequence from layout to the deck itself. If the pool is in the ground and the finish or equipment is what is tired, pool remodeling is the page for that.
